Last Updated: March 26, 2026
TL;DR: PencilTime is designed to keep your data private. Your drawings, notes, and calendar entries stay on your devices. We don't sell your data or show ads. Optional iCloud sync uses Apple's secure infrastructure.
Our Privacy Commitment
PencilTime is built with your privacy as a core principle. We believe your planner is deeply personal, and we've designed our app to respect that belief. Your data is yours—we don't monetize it, analyze it, or share it with anyone.
Information We DON'T Collect
PencilTime does not collect, store, or transmit any of the following:
- Personal information (name, email, phone number, address)
- Device identifiers for tracking purposes
- Your drawings, notes, or planner content
- Calendar event details beyond what you choose to sync
- Location data
- Browsing history or app usage patterns
- Any other personal or identifying information for marketing purposes
Data Stored Locally on Your Device
The following information is stored on your iPhone and iPad using Apple's Core Data framework:
Planner Content
- Your drawings and handwritten notes (stored as Apple PencilKit data)
- Planner pages for daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly views
- Page overlays and templates you've created
- Stickers (emoji and text) you've added to pages
Calendar Integration (Premium Feature)
- References to Apple Calendar events you choose to display
- Calendar event display is read-only—we don't modify your calendar
- Access controlled through iOS permissions (you can revoke anytime)
App Preferences
- Pen tool settings (colors, stroke widths)
- Template preferences
- Whether you've completed onboarding
- Premium subscription status (managed by Apple)
Important: All of this data remains on your device unless you explicitly enable iCloud sync (see below).
iCloud Sync (Optional Premium Feature)
Premium subscribers can optionally enable iCloud sync to keep their planner synchronized across multiple devices:
How iCloud Sync Works
- Encrypted by Apple: Data is encrypted in transit and at rest using Apple's security infrastructure
- Your Control: You can enable or disable sync at any time in Settings
- Direct to iCloud: Data syncs directly to your personal iCloud account—we never see it
- Apple's Infrastructure: All sync is handled by Apple's CloudKit framework
What Gets Synced
- Planner pages and drawings
- Stickers and overlays
- App preferences
Note: When you disable iCloud sync, you can choose to keep local data or switch to local-only storage. Your data remains on your devices until you explicitly delete it.
For information about how Apple handles iCloud data, please review Apple's Privacy Policy.
